ALPHA-HYDROXY ACIDS

SKIN CARE PRODUCTS WITH ALPHA-HYDROXY ACIDS

Alpha-hydroxy acids or AHAs, incorporated in small amounts, these fruit acids have recently become a key ingredient in specialized skin care products.

AHAs have become one of the biggest skin care invention of the 1990s. Many people who have tried it found that AHAs dramatically improve their skin condition. There is a new glow in their complexion. The success of AHA looks set to continue for many years.

WHERE CAN WE FIND AHA?

Alpha-hydroxy acids can be found occurring naturally in various products. They may come in the various forms:

  • Citric acid found in citrus fruits
  • Lactic acid found in milk
  • Tartaric acid found in wine
  • Malic acid found in apples and other fruits

Without even realizing the exact reasons for their improved skin, women have used alpha-hydroxy acids or AHAs for centuries. For example, Cleopatra is said to have bathed in sour asses’ milk, and ladies of the French court applied wine to their faces to keep their skin smooth, supple and blemish free. Both these ancient beauty aids are now known to contain alpha-hydroxy acids or AHAs.

HOW DOES AHA WORK?

Dead skin cells on the surface of the skin are held together by protein bonds. Alpha-hydroxy acids or AHAs breaks down these protein bonds. The dead skin cells are then lifted away and the brighter and plumper cells underneath are revealed. This gentle process has the effect of cleaning and clearing blocked pores. The result is improvement in your skin tone and softening of fine lines. It would usually take a couple of weeks before you begin to see results. However some women reported improvements after only a few days.

HOW DO WE APPLY AHA?

AHA products are best used as a treatment cream. Apply the AHA product before applying your regular moisturizer. You may experience a slight tingling sensation initially. Avoid sensitive areas such as the eye and lip areas.

If you have very sensitive skin, AHA may not be suitable for you.

AHA products are now becoming more affordable. Many mid-market companies are including the benefits of alpha-hydroxy acids or AHAs in their products. This means that everyone can afford to give their skin this special treatment.

There are alpha-hydroxy acids or AHA products for the hands and body. Here is a selection if you are looking for AHA skin care products:

  • SkinStore, Inc offers a fine selection of skin care products that contains AHA. Click here and type in “alpha hydroxyl acids” in the search box to search for what you are need.
  • ZENMED™ AHA/BHA Complex is a new unique exfoliating/peel treatment designed to heal and repair acne-prone skin.
