Causes of Acne

Taking the 1st step towards Acne Control and Treatment

Let’s find out more about the possible causes of acne. Knowing what causes a problem will teach us how we can better control acne and provide better treatment.

Acne occurs when the hair follicles on our skin are clogged with plug which is a mixture of oil and dead skin cells.

The hair follicles are linked to sebaceous glands underneath the skin.

The sebaceous glands are the ones that produce sebum which will normally flow out to the surface of the skin.

If there is excessive sebum and dead skin cells being produced, the two will build up in the hair follicles causing plug to build up.

There could be several contributing factors that affect a person’s skin condition resulting in outbreaks of acne.

Here is a list of some of the known causes of acne.

Hormonal Change and Acne

One of the chief causes of acne is hormonal changes.

Hormonal changes can happen in the following situations:

  • During puberty
  • During a woman’s menstruation cycle
  • During pregnancy

During such time, the body begins to generate androgens which are hormones that will cause the sebaceous glands to be enlarged. It will also over-stimulate the sebaceous glands causing excessive sebum.

The excess sebum (oil) produced will flow to the surface of the skin and mixed with dead skin cells and bacteria. They block the opening of the follicle.

Inside the blocked pore, bacteria grow and multiply, causing inflammation leading to the spots and pustules associated with acne.

When the walls of the follicles bursts open, the inflammation will spread to the surrounding skin.

This is why hormonal changes is one of the main causes of acne. Most people will develop acne during their puberty years as there is a surge of the sex hormone androgen.

If you are a teenager troubled by acne, pay more attention to your skin care routine.
