Cellulite

Cause, Prevention and Treatment of Cellulite

Cellulite or " orange peel " skin is a term commonly used to describe a skin condition where the skin is bulging, dimpled and uneven.

These lumps, bumps and bulges tend to form on the thighs, bottoms, hips and abdomens.

It has often been thought they are a special type of "fat gone wrong ", or a combination of fat, water and toxic waste that the body fails to expel. It is the bane of most women.

While not a serious or life threatening condition, cellulite does affect the appearance and self-esteem of the sufferer.

Many people have the misconception that "orange peel" skin happens to older or plumper women only. This is not true as many slim and young women suffer from it too.

There have been many nicknames that have been given this skin condition. Names such as the orange-peel skin, the cottage cheese skin or the mattress syndrome refer to the same thing.

Causes of Cellulite

Nobody knows for sure the causes of this skin problem. There has also been plenty of confusion and contradiction with regards to its cause and treatment.

Some people think it is a buildup of fluids, fat and toxins. Laboratory analysis has proven that it is no different from any other fat cells. Neither does it contain any other unique substance.

While cellulite affects your looks, it is not considered an illness and it is unlikely to have any ill effects on your health. However, it could a sign of an unhealthy lifestyle.

In the body, there are fibers holding the fat cells together forming a network. Body fluids provide nourishment to these cells. The cells are also being cleansed by these body fluids.

If the blood circulation is poor, the cleansing process will be hindered and will slow down. Waste materials that cannot be dispelled from the body will begin to accumulate. These will thicken and harden. They will become immovable pockets of fat, causing a dimpled effect on the skin.

Below are some factors which may aggravate the skin condition:

HEREDITARY FACTORS

Unfortunately, it runs in the family. If anyone in the family has it, your chances of developing this skin problem are high.

HORMONES

Hormones and contraceptive pills may cause or aggravate the skin condition if you are already suffering from it.
