CELLULITE

CAUSE, PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF CELLULITE

Cellulite or “orange peel” skin is a term commonly used to describe a skin condition where the skin is bulging, dimpled and uneven. These lumps, bumps and bulges tend to form on thighs, bottoms, hips and abdomens. They are alleged to be a special type of “fat gone wrong”, or a combination of fat, water and toxic waste that the body fails to expel. It is the bane of most women.

While it is not a serious or life threatening condition, it does affect the appearance and self-esteem of the sufferer.

Many people have the misconception that “orange peel” skin happens to older or plumper women only. This is not true as many slim and young women suffer from it too.

There have been many nicknames that have been given this skin condition. Names such as the orange-peel skin, the cottage cheese skin or the mattress syndrome refer to the same thing.

WHAT CAUSES CELLULITE?

Nobody knows for sure what causes cellulite. There has also been plenty of confusion and contradiction with regards to its cause and treatment.

Some people think it is a build up of fluids, fat and toxins. Laboratory analysis has proven that it is no different from any other fat cells. Neither does it contain any other unique substance.

While cellulite affects your looks, it is not considered an illness and it is unlikely to have any ill effects on your health. However, it could a sign of an unhealthy lifestyle.

In the body, there are fibers holding the fat cells together forming a network. Body fluids provide nourishment to these cells. The cells are also being cleansed by these body fluids.

If the blood circulation is poor, the cleansing process will be hindered and will slow down. Waste materials that cannot be dispelled from the body will begin to accumulate. These will thicken and harden. They will become immovable pockets of fat. This the cause of the dimple affect for cellulite skin.

Below are some factors which may cause cellulite or aggravate the condition:

HEREDITARY FACTORS
Unfortunately, it runs in the family. If anyone in the family has it, your chances of developing this skin problem are high.

HORMONES
Hormones and contraceptive pills may cause or aggravate the skin condition if you are already suffering from it.

UNHEALTHY DIETS
An unhealthy diet generates a lot of toxins in the body. The body will be under a lot strain trying to dispel of the huge amount of waste. In addition, an unhealthy diet which is low in fibre and high in fat does not provide the sufficient fibre for the digestive system. The body cannot get rid of toxins effectively and efficiently.

STRESS AND NO EXERCISE
Stress and no exercise cause the body to be sluggish. It slows down the blood circulation and causes lethargy in your lymphatic system.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF CELLULITE?

People who are suffering from cellulite will show some of these symptoms:

  • The skin has a dimpled effect. It may look bulging or doughy in certain areas.
  • When pressed, pinched or massaged vigorously, the skin may feel tender.
  • The skin feels hard and cold. The coldness is probably due to the lack of blood circulation.
  • There is feeling of tightness and strange heaviness in the legs.

To test if you have cellulite, squeeze the skin on your upper thigh with your thumb and index finger. If the flesh feels lumpy and looks bumpy, then you have this undesirable skin condition.
