ECZEMA AND DIETS

ARE SKIN PROBLEMS LIKE ECZEMA LINKED TO OUR DIETS?

Western medicine practitioners believe that eczema is a skin condition that has little to do with the food we eat. Complementary medicine practitioners believe the condition is more than skin deep and has everything to do with what we consume.

Naturopathy a system or method of treating disease that employs no surgery or synthetic drugs but uses special diets, herbs, vitamins, massage, etc., to assist the natural healing processes.

Practitioners advocate the use of herbal medication to relieve skin problems. They believe that herbal preparations work through their anti-inflammatory, antihistamine activities that help control the itching and pain. These medications also have diuretic activity that eliminates the toxins through urine, purify blood and prevent damage caused by free radicals in the body. Such herbs include neem, triphala and manjishta.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal supplements have also been used for treating these skin conditions.

Allergies are more common in individuals with eczema. Where there are significant indicators of allergies, such as gastrointestinal symptoms (for example, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea and colic in infants) or hives, food allergy is suspected.

Eggs, milk, peanuts, soya beans, wheat, fish and tree nuts (for example, walnuts and cashews) are responsible for 85 per cent of all food allergies.

Hence, diet plays a very important role, at least, according to TCM and naturopathy practitioners.

However, before people leave Western medicine for Eastern, you should find out if the practitioner’s qualification is recognized by regulatory bodies in your country, and if they have been trained in well-reputed universities which offer natural therapy courses.

Also, are the herbal products tested according to the World Health Organisation pharmaceutical standards for heavy metal and microbial contamination? In other words, they are safe to take.

We shouldn’t discount Western medicine either. For severe flare-ups, antibiotic treatments may be required to combat the infections.
