EYE CREAMS

GUIDE ON CHOOSING EYE CREAMS

Eye creams are creams that have been tested by ophthalmologists to be safe to use near your eyes. They usually do not any colouring or fragrance. As they are more emollient than regular moisturizers, they are a much better choice for the skin around the eyes.

Why do we need to pay so much attention to the skin around our eyes?

Take a close look at your eyes and its surrounding skin in the mirror. Can you see that the skin is here is more delicate and fine than the rest of the face?. Actually, the skin surrounding the eye is 5 to 10 times thinner compared to the rest of the face.

In additional, we are frequently rubbing our eyes, crying or laughing. An average person will blink more than 100,000 times a day. Every time we rub our eyes, make a funny face, smile, frown or cry, we are placing a demand on the skin surrounding our eyes.

This explains the reason why the skin around the eyes is usually the first to show signs of ageing. It is very common to see fine lines and wrinkles or dark shadows and puffiness under the eyes.

Other factors that could lead to premature aging include sun exposure, smoking, lack of sleep and dehydration.

WHAT CAN EYE CREAMS DO?

Some common functions include:

  • Soothes, firms and nourishes the area around the eyes
  • Reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes
  • Repair and prevent further damage to the skin around the eye
  • Provides extra moisture

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING EYE CREAMS?

When choosing an eye cream, look for firming ingredients and darkness-inhibiting ingredients.

Firming Ingredients

Common firming ingredients include:

Both alcohol and caffeine has the effect of dehydrating skin, thus making it taut. However, the benefit is temporary only.

Alpha-hydroxy acids, copper, retinol and vitamin C work under the skin, stimulating growth of collagen. The benefits are more permanent.

Darkness-inhibiting Ingredients

Common darkness-inhibiting ingredients include:

  • Hydroquinone
  • Kojic acid
  • Vitamin K
Dark shadows under the eyes are caused by too much blood flow. Vitamin K have been found to counteract this and thus inhibit the formation of dark shadows and minor bruises.

Hydroquinone and kojic acid are ingredients often found in skin-lightening products such as bleaching and age-spot creams.
