Blackheads

Cause, Prevention and Removal of Blackheads

Blackheads are symptoms of the very common skin problem known as acne. It is caused by over-active sebaceous glands of the skin.

Acne is a skin condition where the hormones of the skin’s oil glands lead to clogged pores.

Symptoms such as whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules or pimples, nodules or cysts appear. These can occur on the neck, face, neck, chest, back, shoulder and even arms.

Although not health threatening, this skin disorder can lead to scarring if not treated and controlled properly. This is a skin condition can cause a lot of emotional upsets.

How does Acne Develop?

The follicles or pores on the skin contain oil glands, also known as sebaceous glands secrete sebum which is an oily substance that helps to lubricate the skin and hair.

Sometimes the skin’s pores get clogged with too much oil or dead skin cells. The combination of oil and dead skin cell is called plug. The plug stops sebum from reaching the surface of the skin and allows bacteria Propionibacterium acnes to grow.

This bacteria produce enzymes and chemicals that attract white blood cells which will cause inflammation.

Inflammation is just a reaction of body tissues to injury or disease. It is marked by four signs: redness, swelling, heat and pain.

When the plugged follicle’s wall breaks down, it’s contents (sebum, dead skin cell and bacteria) spill into the nearby skin, acne lesions are formed.

There are different types of acne lesions with various levels of severity. These include :

  • Whiteheads
  • Blackheads
  • Papules
  • Pustules
  • Pimples
  • Macules
  • Nodules
  • Cysts

Here is an article with more about the different types of acne lesions.

Causes of Acne

While we may not know all the causes of acne, there are a number of factors that could trigger an outbreak. Some of these include hormonal changes, genetic factors or poor skin care habits.

The bad news is, these acne blemishes are hard to prevent as the skin is constantly producing sebum and renewing itself. The collection of oil and dead skin cells builds up quickly in the pores.

A consistent skin care routine can help keep them under control. Do not pick at or try to squeeze the acne blemishes such as black or whiteheads with your fingers. The risk of doing so is infection and scarring.

Here are some tips and methods that will help to keep them under control and remove them in a timely manner. Each of them has its benefits and its drawbacks.

  • KEEP YOUR SKIN CLEAN
This is by far the most important tip. Develop a good facial and body skin care routine. Exercise discipline to wash the dirt, grime, oil and cosmetics away from the face and skin.
